Local maps assume you already know the city
The apps residents rely on assume you read Chinese and already know how the city works. Ideas reach you through social posts, blogs and friends, but the details that decide whether a place is worth an afternoon — opening hours, reservations, how long to allow, what it costs, how to pay, where to be dropped off — are scattered, translated badly, or missing.
NihaoMap is built for that gap: fewer places, better facts, in English, with the Chinese you need close at hand.
Find, decide, arrive
Decide
Place pages answer the practical questions: whether it is open now, whether you should book ahead, how long to allow, what it costs, and the small frictions that catch visitors out. Guides show the date they were last verified.
Arrive
Hand the route to the navigation app you already use. Then Show in Chinese puts the place name, the address or a drop-off point, and a short Chinese phrase in front of a driver or the person at the entrance.
Saved places stay on your device. No account, no sign-up.
Shanghai, and only Shanghai — for now
NihaoMap covers Shanghai today. Places are not bulk-imported: a place appears once its practical details hold up, and the date it was last verified travels with it. Some places carry a full guide; others are listed so you can still find them by name and navigate there.
Opening hours, ticket rules and reservation policies change without notice. Treat every detail as a starting point and confirm before you set off — that is why the app says Check before you go.
Nothing to log in to
- No account, no sign-up, no advertising, and no NihaoMap product analytics.
- Your precise location stays on your device. A “near me” search sends only a coarsened center point, rounded to a few hundred meters.
- Saved places, and the details you have already opened, stay on your device.
- Map tiles come from Mapbox, which processes map requests under its own privacy policy.
Release status
NihaoMap is in final preparation for its first release on iPhone and Android. There is no public download link yet; when there is, it will appear on this page and on the store listings.
